The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 

2 He was in the beginning with God. 

3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 

4 In him was life,1 and the life was the light of men. 

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 

7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 

8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 

11 He came to his own,2 and his own people3 did not receive him. 

12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 

15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 

16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.4 

17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has ever seen God; the only God,5 who is at the Father’s side,6 he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 

20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 

21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 

22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 

23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight7 the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 

25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 

27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 

30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 

31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 

32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 

33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 

34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 

36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 

37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 

38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 

39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.8 

40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus9 was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 

41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 

42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter10).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 

45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 

46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 

48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 

49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 

50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 

51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,11 you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

La luce nel mondo

1 All'inizio c'era la Parola. La Parola era con Dio ed era Dio. 

2 Dall'inizio era con Dio. 

3 Ogni cosa venne all'esistenza per mezzo suo e senza di lui non è stato fatto nulla di cio che è stato creato. 

4 In lui c'è la vita e questa vita dà luce a tutta l'umanità. 

5 La sua luce splende nelle tenebre, ma le tenebre non l'hanno ricevuto. 

6 Dio mando un uomo di nome Giovanni [Battista] 

7 per testimoniare riguardo questa luce e per dare a tutti la possibilità di credere. 

8 Giovanni non era la luce; era soltanto un testimone. 

9 Doveva ancora giungere colui che è la vera luce, che illumina ogni essere umano. 

10 Benché era nel mondo, che egli stesso aveva creato, quando venne, il mondo non lo riconobbe. 

11 Non fu accettato neppure nel proprio paese, fra la sua gente. 

12 Ma a tutti quelli che lo hanno ricevuto egli ha dato il diritto di diventare figli di Dio, cioè a coloro che credono in lui. 

13 Non diventano figli di Dio per una rinascita fisica, risultante dalla volontà dell'uomo o dalla sua passione, ma sono nati da Dio. 

14 La Parola divenne uomo e visse qui fra noi, e noi abbiamo visto la sua gloria, la gloria dell'unico Figlio del Padre pieno di grazia e di verità.

L'Agnello di Dio

15 Giovanni lo presento alla gente, dicendo: "Ecco colui al quale mi riferivo quando dissi: "Dopo di me, arriverà un uomo più importante di me, perché esisteva già prima di me!""

16 Dalla sua pienezza noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto, una benedizione dopo l'altra. 

17 Infatti, la legge è stata data per mano di Mosè, ma la grazia e la verità per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.

18 Nessuno ha mai visto Dio, solo l'unico Figlio, Dio, che è unito al Padre, è quello che ce l'ha fatto conoscere! 

19 Ecco cio che disse Giovanni quando i Giudei mandarono da Gerusalemme dei sacerdoti con i loro aiutanti per chiedergli: "Chi sei?" 

20 Giovanni non lo nego, ma dichiaro apertamente: "No, non sono io il Cristo". 

21 "Allora chi sei?" gli chiesero. "Sei Elia?"No", rispose Giovanni."Sei forse il profeta?"No". 

22 "Chi sei, dunque? Diccelo, così possiamo rispondere a quelli che ce l'hanno domandato. Chi dici di essere?"

23 Giovanni rispose: "Come disse il profeta Isaia: "Io sono una voce che grida nel deserto: preparatevi per l'arrivo del Signore!" 

24 Quelli che erano stati mandati erano Farisei, 

25 e gli chiesero: "Se non sei il Messia, né Elia, e neppure il profeta, che diritto hai di battezzare?" 

26 Giovanni rispose: "Io battezzo con acqua; ma proprio qui, fra voi, c'è qualcuno che ancora non conoscete, 

27 che opererà fra di voi dopo di me; qualcuno del quale non son degno neppure di slegargli il sandalo!" 

28 Questo episodio avvenne a Betània, un villaggio sull'altra riva del fiume Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando. 

29 Il giorno dopo, Giovanni vide Gesù venirgli incontro, e disse: "Ecco l'Agnello di Dio che toglie il peccato del mondo! 

30 È a lui che mi riferivo, quando dissi: "Dopo di me arriverà un uomo che mi ha preceduto, perché esisteva già prima che io nascessi! 

31 Non sapevo chi fosse, ma sono venuto a battezzare con acqua per farlo conoscere al popolo d'Israele". 

32 Poi Giovanni disse: "Ho visto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo sotto forma di colomba e fermarsi sopra Gesù.

33 "Io non lo conoscevo, ma chi mando a battezzare in acqua, mi disse: "Quello su cui vedrai lo Spirito Santo scendere e fermarsi, sarà quello che battezza con lo Spirito Santo".

34 Ebbene, io ho visto e sono testimone: è lui il Figlio di Dio!"

I primi discepoli

35 Il giorno seguente, mentre Giovanni stava con due suoi discepoli, 

36 Gesù passo di lì. Giovanni lo guardo attentamente ed esclamo: "Ecco l'Agnello di Dio!" 

37 A queste parole i due discepoli di Giovanni si misero a seguire Gesù. 

38 Gesù, si volto e, visto che lo seguivano, domando loro: "Che cosa cercate?"Maestro", gli chiesero, "dove abiti?" 

39 "Venite a vedere" rispose il Signore. Così lo seguirono, videro dove abitava e rimasero con lui per la giornata. Era circa la decima ora. 

40 Uno di questi discepoli di Giovanni era Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro. 

41 La prima cosa che fece fu di cercare suo fratello Simone e dirgli: "Abbiamo trovato il Messia!" (Messia significa Cristo). 

42 Poi lo condusse a Gesù.Gesù, vedendolo disse: "Tu sei Simone, figlio di Giovanni, ma sarai chiamato Cefa, "Pietro" (in aramaico Cefa significa pietra). 

43 Il giorno dopo, Gesù decise di andare in Galilea e, incontrando Filippo, gli disse: "Vieni con me". 

44 Filippo era di Betsàida, la città di Andrea e Pietro. 

45 Filippo a sua volta ando a trovare Natanaele: "Abbiamo trovato quello di cui parlano Mosè ed i profeti nelle Scritture! Si chiama Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe di Nazaret!" 

46 "Nazaret?!" esclamo Natanaele, "Puo venire qualcosa di buono da là?"E Filippo: "Vieni a vedere". 

47 Gesù, vedendolo arrivare, osservo: "Ecco un Israelita veramente onesto!" 

48 "Come fai a conoscermi?" domando allora Natanaele. E Gesù rispose: "Ti ho visto sotto l'albero di fico, prima ancora che Filippo ti chiamasse". 

49 Natanaele rispose: "Signore, tu sei il Figlio di Dio, Re d'Israele!" 

50 E Gesù: "Tu credi solo perché ho detto che ti ho visto sotto il fico? Vedrai cose ben più grandi di questa. 

51 Io ti dico che vedrai perfino il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e scendere su di me, il Figlio dell'uomo!"

1 Kezdetben volt az I

4 Őbenne volt az élet, és az élet volt azemberek világossága.

6 Volt egy Istentől küldött ember, akinek a neve János volt. 

7 Ő tanúbizonyságul jött, hogy bizonyságot tegyen a világosságról, hogy mindenkihiggyen őáltala. 

8 Nem ő volt a világosság, azért jött, hogy bizonyságot tegyena világosságról. 

9 Az igazi világosság eljött már a világba, amely megvilágosítminden embert. 

10 A világban volt, és a világ általa lett, de a világ nemismerte meg őt. 

11 Az övéi közé jött, és az övéi nem fogadták be. 

12 Akik pedig befogadták, azokat felhatalmazta arra, hogy, hogy Isten fiaiválegyenek, mindazokat, akik az ő nevében hisznek. 

13 Akik nem vérből, sem atestnek akaratából, sem a férfiúnak indulatából, hanem Istentől születtek. 

14 És az Ige testté lett, és lakozott miközöttünk (és láttuk az ő dicsőségét,mint az Atya egyszülöttjének dicsőségét), aki teljes volt kegyelemmel és igazsággal. 

15 János bizonyságot tett őróla, és kiáltott, ezt mondva: ,,Ez volt az,akiről mondtam: Aki utánam jön, előttem lett, mert előbb volt nálam.'' 

16 És az ő teljességéből vettünk mindnyájan kegyelmet is kegyelemért. 

17 Mert a törvény Mózes által adatott, a kegyelem pedig és az igazság JézusKrisztus által lett.

18 Az Istent soha senki nem látta, az egyszülött Fiú, akiaz Atya kebelén van, az jelentette ki őt.

Keresztelő János bizonyságtétele

19 És ez János bizonyságtétele. Amikor a zsidók papokat és lévitákat küldtekJeruzsálemből, hogy megkérdezzék őt: ,,Kicsoda vagy te?'' 

20 Megvallotta és nem tagadta, megvallotta, hogy: ,,Nem én vagyok aKrisztus.'' 

21 Megkérdezték őt: ,,Kicsoda tehát? Illés vagyte?'' Ezt mondta: ,,Nem vagyok.'' ,,A próféta vagyte?'' És ő felelte: ,,Nem.'' 

22 Mondták azért neki:,,Kicsoda vagy? Hogy megfelelhessünk azoknak, akik minket elküldtek: Mit mondasz magadfelől?'' 

23 Ő ezt mondta: ,,Én kiáltó szó vagyok a pusztában.Egyengessétek az Úrnak útját, amint megmondta Ézsaiás próféta.'' 

24 Aküldöttek a farizeusok közül valók voltak. 

25 Megkérdezték őt, és ezt mondtákneki: ,,Miért keresztelsz tehát, ha nem te vagy a Krisztus, sem Illés, sem apróféta?'' 

26 János így felelt nekik: ,,Én vízzelkeresztelek, de köztetek van, akit ti nem ismertek. 

27 Ő az, aki utánam jön, akielőttem lett, akinek én nem vagyok méltó, hogy saruja szíját megoldjam.'' 

28 Ezek Betániában történtek, a Jordánon túl, ahol János keresztelt. 

29 Másnap látta János Jézust hozzámenni, és ezt mondta: ,,Íme, azIstennek ama báránya, aki elveszi a világ bűneit! 

30 Ez az, akiről én eztmondtam: Utánam jön egy férfiú, aki előttem lett, mert előbb volt nálam. 

31 Énnem ismertem őt, de hogy megjelentessék Izraelnek, azért jöttem én, aki vízzelkeresztelek.'' 

32 És bizonyságot tett János, ezt mondva:,,Láttam a Lelket leszállni az égből, mint egy galambot, és megnyugodott őrajta. 

33 Én nem ismertem őt, de aki elküldött engem, hogy vízzel kereszteljek, azmondta nekem: Akire látod a Lelket leszállni és rajta megnyugodni, ő az, aki Szentlélekkelkeresztel. 

34 Én láttam, és bizonyságot tettem, hogy ez az IstenFia.''

Jézus első követői

35 Másnap ismét ott állt János és kettő az ő tanítványai közül, 

36 ránézve Jézusra, amint ott járt, mondta: ,,Íme, az IstenBáránya!'' 

37 Hallotta őt a két tanítvány, amint szólt, és követtékJézust. 

38 Jézus pedig hátrafordult, és látva, hogy követik azok, ezt mondtanekik: 

39 ,,Mit kerestek?'' Azok pedig mondták neki:,,Rabbi -- ami azt jelenti: Mester --, hol laksz?'' 

40 Mondtanekik: ,,Jöjjetek, és lássátok meg.'' Elmentek, meglátták, hol lakik, és nálamaradtak azon a napon: akkor pedig körülbelül tíz óra volt. 

41 A kettő közül,akik Jánostól ezt hallották, és őt követték, András volt az egyik, Simon Péter testvére. 

42 Ő találkozott először a saját testvérével, Simonnal, és mondta neki:,,Megtaláltuk a Messiást'' -- (ami azt jelenti: Krisztus). 

43 És Jézushoz vezette őt. Jézus pedig reátekintve, mondta: ,,TeSimon vagy, Jóna fia, téged Kéfásnak fognak hívni'' -- (ami azt jelenti: Kőszikla). 

44 A következő napon Galileába akart menni Jézus, találkozott Fülöppel, ésmondta neki: ,,Kövess engem!'' 

45 Fülöp pedig Betsaidából,András és Péter városából való volt. 

46 Fülöp találkozott Nátánáellel, és mondtaneki: ,,Akiről Mózes írt a törvényben, és a próféták, megtaláltuk, a názáreti Jézust,Józsefnek fiát.'' 

47 Mondta neki Nátánáel: ,,Názáretbőltámadhat-e valami jó?'' Fülöp ezt mondta neki: ,,Jöjj, és lásdmeg!'' 

48 Látta Jézus Nátánáelt őhozzá menni, és azt mondta róla:,,Íme, egy igazán izraelita, akiben hamisság nincsen.'' 

49 Nátánael ezt mondta neki: ,,Honnan ismersz engem?'' Jézusígy felelt neki: ,,Mielőtt hívott téged Fülöp, láttalak téged, amint a fügefa alattvoltál.'' 

50 Nátánáel így felelte neki: ,,Rabbi, te vagy azIsten Fia, te vagy az Izrael Királya!'' 

51 Jézus így felelt neki:,,Azért, mert azt mondtam neked: láttalak a fügefa alatt, hiszel? Nagyobbakat látszmajd ezeknél.'' 

52 És mondta neki: ,,Bizony, bizony mondomnéktek: Mostantól fogva meglátjátok a megnyílt eget és az Isten angyalait, amint felszállnak ésleszállnak az Emberfiára.''

Christus, das ewige Wort

1 Am Anfang war das Wort. Das Wort war bei Gott und das Wort war Gott. 

2 Er1 war am Anfang bei Gott. 

3 Durch ihn wurde alles geschaffen, was ist. Es gibt nichts, was er, das Wort, nicht geschaffen hat. 

4 Das Leben selbst war in ihm, und dieses Leben schenkt allen Menschen Licht. 

5 Das Licht scheint in der Dunkelheit, und die Dunkelheit konnte es nicht auslöschen. 

6 Gott sandte Johannes den Täufer, 

7 um allen Menschen von dem Licht zu erzählen, damit durch ihn alle daran glauben. 

8 Johannes selbst war nicht das Licht; er war nur ein Zeuge für das Licht. 

9 Der, der das wahre Licht ist, das alle Menschen erleuchtet, sollte erst noch in die Welt kommen. 

10 Doch obwohl die Welt durch ihn geschaffen wurde, erkannte die Welt ihn nicht, als er kam. 

11 Er kam in die Welt, die ihm gehört, und sein eigenes Volk nahm ihn nicht auf. 

12 All denen aber, die ihn aufnahmen und an seinen Namen glaubten, gab er das Recht, Gottes Kinder zu werden. 

13 Sie wurden dies weder durch ihre Abstammung noch durch menschliches Bemühen oder Absicht, sondern dieses neue Leben kommt von Gott. 

14 Er, der das Wort ist, wurde Mensch und lebte unter uns. Er war voll Gnade und Wahrheit und wir wurden Zeugen seiner Herrlichkeit, der Herrlichkeit, die der Vater ihm, seinem einzigen Sohn, gegeben hat. 

15 Auf ihn wies Johannes die Menschen hin. Er rief ihnen zu: »Das ist der, von dem ich gesagt habe: `Es kommt einer nach mir, der ist größer als ich, denn er war da, lange bevor es mich gab.´« 

16 Immer und immer wieder haben wir den Reichtum seines Segens2 empfangen. 

17 Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Mose gegeben; Gottes Gnade und Wahrheit aber kamen durch Jesus Christus. 

18 Niemand hat Gott je gesehen. Doch sein einziger Sohn, der selbst Gott ist3, ist dem Herzen des Vaters ganz nahe; er hat uns von ihm erzählt.

Das Zeugnis Johannes des Täufers

19 Die führenden Männer des jüdischen Volkes schickten Priester und Leviten aus Jerusalem zu Johannes, um ihn zu fragen: »Wer bist du eigentlich?« 

20 Johannes schwieg nicht, sondern bekannte klar und deutlich: »Ich bin nicht der Christus4.« 

21 »Wer bist du dann?«, fragten sie. »Bist du Elia?« »Nein«, erwiderte er. »Bist du der Prophet?«5 »Nein.« 

22 »Wer bist du dann? Sag es uns, damit wir die Antwort denen überbringen können, die uns geschickt haben. Was sagst du selbst, wer du bist?« 

23 Johannes antwortete mit den Worten des Propheten Jesaja: »Ich bin eine Stimme, die in der Wüste ruft: `Ebnet den Weg für das Kommen des Herrn!´«6 

24 Darauf fragten ihn die Abgesandten der Pharisäer: 

25 »Wenn du weder der Christus noch Elia oder der Prophet bist, mit welchem Recht taufst du dann?« 

26 Johannes antwortete ihnen: »Ich taufe nur mit7 Wasser, doch hier mitten unter euch

El Verbo se hizo hombre

1 En el principio ya existía el Verbo,y el Verbo estaba con Dios,y el Verbo era Dios. 

2 Él estaba con Dios en el principio. 

3 Por medio de él todas las cosas fueron creadas;sin él, nada de lo creado llegó a existir. 

4 En él estaba la vida,y la vida era la luz de la humanidad. 

5 Esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas,y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.1 

6 Vino un hombre llamado Juan. Dios lo envió 

7 como testigo para dar testimonio de la luz, a fin de que por medio de él todos creyeran. 

8 Juan no era la luz, sino que vino para dar testimonio de la luz. 

9 Esa luz verdadera, la que alumbra a todo ser humano, venía a este mundo.2 

10 El que era la luz ya estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue creado por medio de él, pero el mundo no lo reconoció. 

11 Vino a lo que era suyo, pero los suyos no lo recibieron. 

12 Mas a cuantos lo recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio el derecho de ser hijos de Dios. 

13 Éstos no nacen de la sangre, ni por deseos naturales, ni por voluntad humana, sino que nacen de Dios. 

14 Y el Verbo se hizo hombre y habitó3 entre nosotros. Y hemos contemplado su gloria, la gloria que corresponde al Hijo unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad. 

15 Juan dio testimonio de él, y a voz en grito proclamó: «Éste es aquel de quien yo decía: “El que viene después de mí es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo. 

16 De su plenitud todos hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia, 

17 pues la ley fue dada por medio de Moisés, mientras que la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por medio de Jesucristo. 

18 A Dios nadie lo ha visto nunca; el Hijo unigénito, quien es Dios4 y que vive en unión íntima con el Padre, nos lo ha dado a conocer.

Juan el Bautista niega ser el Cristo

19 Éste es el testimonio de Juan cuando los judíos de Jerusalén enviaron sacerdotes y levitas a preguntarle quién era. 

20 No se negó a declararlo, sino que confesó con franqueza:—Yo no soy el Cristo. 

21 —¿Quién eres entonces? —le preguntaron—. ¿Acaso eres Elías?—No lo soy.—¿Eres el profeta?—No lo soy. 

22 —¿Entonces quién eres? ¡Tenemos que llevar una respuesta a los que nos enviaron! ¿Qué dices de ti mismo? 

23 —Yo soy la voz del que grita en el desierto: “Enderezad el camino del Señor 

24 Algunos que habían sido enviados por los fariseos 

25 lo interrogaron:—Pues si no eres el Cristo, ni Elías ni el profeta, ¿por qué bautizas? 

26 —Yo bautizo con5 agua, pero entre vosotros hay alguien a quien no conocéis,

27 y que viene detrás de mí, al cual yo no soy digno ni siquiera de desatarle la correa de las sandalias. 

28 Todo esto sucedió en Betania, al otro lado del río Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando.
