Verteidigung als Bekenntnis

1 Dann fragte der Hohe Priester: "Ist das wahr?" 

2 Stephanus antwortete: "Ihr Männer Israels, meine Brüder und Väter, hört mich an! Der Gott, dem alle Herrlichkeit gehört, erschien unserem Vater Abraham in Mesopotamien, als er noch nicht nach Haran gezogen war. 

3 Er sagte zu ihm: 'Verlass deine Heimat und deine Verwandtschaft und zieh in das Land, das ich dir zeigen werde.'1 

4 Da verließ Abraham das Land der Chaldäer und zog nach Haran. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters führte Gott ihn in dieses Land, in dem ihr heute lebt. 

5 Er gab ihm aber keinen Grundbesitz darin, nicht einen Fußbreit. Doch er versprach, ihm und seinen Nachkommen das Land zu geben - obwohl Abraham damals noch kein Kind hatte. 

6 Die Worte Gottes lauteten folgendermaßen: 'Deine Nachkommen werden als Fremde in einem fremden Land leben. Vierhundert Jahre lang wird man sie versklaven und misshandeln.

7 Doch ich werde das Volk, das sie zum Sklavendienst zwingt, zur Rechenschaft ziehen', sagte Gott. 'Danach werden sie aus dem Land ziehen und mir an diesem Ort dienen.'2 

8 Dann gewährte Gott Abraham den Bund, dessen Zeichen die Beschneidung3 ist. Deshalb beschnitt Abraham den Isaak am achten Tag, nachdem er geboren wurde. Isaak tat es genauso mit Jakob, und Jakob mit unseren zwölf Stammvätern. 

9 Unsere Stammväter waren jedoch neidisch auf Josef und verkauften ihn als Sklaven nach Ägypten. Doch Gott stand ihm bei

10 und half ihm aus allen Schwierigkeiten heraus. Er ließ ihn die Gunst des Pharao gewinnen und schenkte ihm Weisheit vor ihm. So setzte ihn der König von Ägypten als Verwalter über das Land und den ganzen königlichen Haushalt ein. 

11 Dann brach eine Hungersnot in ganz Ägypten und Kanaan aus und brachte großes Elend. Auch unsere Väter hatten nichts mehr zu essen. 

12 Als Jakob erfuhr, dass es in Ägypten noch Getreide gab, schickte er unsere Stammväter das erste Mal hin. 

13 Beim zweiten Mal gab Josef sich seinen Brüdern zu erkennen und so erfuhr der Pharao, wo Josef herkam. 

14 Dann ließ Josef seinen Vater Jakob und die ganze Verwandtschaft zu sich rufen, 75 Menschen4. 

15 So kam Jakob nach Ägypten. Dort starben er und auch unsere Väter. 

16 Später wurden ihre Leichname nach Sichem überführt und in dem Familiengrab beigesetzt, das Abraham von den Söhnen Hamors dort gekauft hatte. 

17 Als dann die Zeit näher kam, in der Gott seine Zusage an Abraham einlösen wollte, wuchs und vermehrte sich unser Volk in Ägypten, 

18 bis ein König auf den ägyptischen Thron kam, der nichts mehr von Josef wusste. 

19 Heimtückisch und grausam ging er gegen unser Volk vor. Er zwang unsere Vorfahren, ihre Säuglinge auszusetzen. Keiner sollte am Leben bleiben. 

20 In dieser Zeit wurde Mose geboren, ein Kind, an dem Gott Gefallen hatte. Drei Monate lang konnten seine Eltern für ihn sorgen. 

21 Als sie ihn dann doch aussetzen mussten, wurde er von der Tochter des Pharao aufgenommen, die ihn als ihren Sohn aufzog. 

22 So erhielt Mose eine umfassende ägyptische Ausbildung und zeichnete sich durch seine Worte und Taten aus. 

23 Mit vierzig Jahren fasste er den Entschluss, sich nach seinen Brüdern und Schwestern, den Israeliten, umzusehen. 

24 Als er einmal sah, wie einer von ihnen ohne Grund misshandelt wurde, griff er ein. Er rächte den Unterdrückten und schlug den Ägypter nieder. 

25 Mose dachte, seine Landsleute würden verstehen, dass Gott sie durch ihn retten wollte. Aber sie verstanden das nicht. 

26 Am nächsten Tag kam er nämlich gerade dazu, wie zwei von ihnen miteinander stritten. Er wollte sie versöhnen, damit sie Frieden hielten. 'Männer', sagte er' 'ihr seid doch Brüder! Warum schlagt ihr euch?' 

27 Aber der, der den Streit angefangen hatte, stieß ihn zur Seite und schrie: 'Wer hat dich eigentlich zum Aufseher und Richter über uns gemacht? 

28 Willst du mich etwa auch umbringen, wie du gestern den Ägypter umgebracht hast?' 

29 Als Mose das hörte, floh er ins Land Midian. Dort lebte er als Ausländer und zeugte zwei Söhne. 

30 So vergingen 40 Jahre. Eines Tages erschien ihm in der Wüste am Berg Sinai ein Engel in der Flamme eines brennenden Dornbuschs. 

31 Mose wunderte sich über die Erscheinung. Er ging näher heran, um sich das genauer anzusehen. Da hörte er die Stimme des Herrn: 

32 'Ich bin der Gott deiner Väter, der Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs.' Mose zitterte vor Angst und wagte nicht hinzusehen. 

33 Der Herr aber sagte: 'Zieh deine Sandalen aus, denn der Ort auf dem du stehst, ist heiliges Land. 

34 Ich habe sehr wohl gesehen, wie mein Volk Israel in Ägypten misshandelt wird, und habe sein Stöhnen gehört. Nun bin ich zu seiner Befreiung gekommen. Und jetzt geh: Ich will dich nach Ägypten senden.' 

35 Gerade den Mose, den sie abgelehnt hatten, als sie sagten: 'Wer hat dich als Aufseher und Richter eingesetzt?' gerade den schickte Gott ihnen jetzt als Anführer und Befreier. Er beauftragte ihn durch den Engel, der ihm im Dornbusch erschienen war. 

36 Gerade dieser Mose führte sie aus dem Land heraus. Er vollbrachte dabei Wunder und außergewöhnliche Zeichen in Ägypten, im Roten Meer und während der 40 Jahre in der Wüste. 

37 Gerade dieser Mose sagte zu den Israeliten: 'Einen Propheten wie mich wird Gott aus eurer Mitte erwecken.' 

38 Und als unsere Vorfahren sich in der Wüste vor Gott versammelten, war es gerade dieser Mose, der Vermittler zwischen ihnen und dem Engel wurde, der auf dem Berg zu ihm redete. Dort erhielt er Worte, die zum Leben führen, und gab sie uns weiter. 

39 Doch unsere Vorfahren wollten Mose nicht gehorchen. Sie lehnten sich gegen ihn auf und waren mit ihrem Herzen schon auf dem Rückweg nach Ägypten, 

40 als sie zu Aaron sagten: 'Mach uns Götter, die wir vor uns hertragen können, damit sie uns schützen! Denn was aus diesem Mose geworden ist, der uns aus Ägypten geführt hat, weiß keiner.' 

41 So machten sie sich damals ein Götzenbild - die Nachbildung eines jungen Stiers -, brachten ihm Opfer und feierten das Werk ihrer Hände. 

42 Da wandte sich Gott von ihnen ab und gab sie preis, das Himmelsheer zu verehren, wie es im Zwölfprophetenbuch5 geschrieben steht: 'Habt ihr etwa für mich 40 Jahre in der Wüste Schlacht- und Speisopfer dargebracht, ihr Israeliten? 

43 Ihr habt das Zeltheiligtum des Moloch mitgenommen und das Sternbild des Gottes Räfan verehrt! Götzenbilder habt ihr euch gemacht, um sie anzubeten! Deshalb werde ich euch in die Verbannung schicken - noch über Babylon hinaus.'6 

44 In der Wüste hatten unsere Vorfahren das Zelt mit dem Bundesgesetz dabei, das nach den Anweisungen Gottes und dem Modell, das Mose gesehen hatte, angefertigt worden war. 

45 Unsere Väter hatten es übernommen und mitgebracht, als sie mit Josua das Land in Besitz nahmen, deren Bewohner Gott vor ihnen vertrieb. Noch bis zur Zeit Davids wurde es benutzt. 

46 Gott war David besonders gnädig. Und David bat ihn, ein festes Heiligtum für die Israeliten bauen zu dürfen.

47 Salomo durfte es dann für Gott bauen. 

48 Aber der Höchste wohnt doch nicht in Häusern, die Menschenhände gebaut haben! Der Prophet sagt das so: 

49 'Der Himmel ist mein Thron und die Erde ist meine Fußbank. Was für ein Haus wollt ihr mir denn bauen, sagt der Herr, wo wollt ihr denn eine Bleibe für mich finden? 

50 Habe ich nicht mit eigener Hand das All und alles erschaffen?'7 

51 Ihr Unbelehrbaren und Unbeschnittenen! Ja, unbeschnitten seid ihr an Herz und Ohren! Andauernd widersetzt ihr euch dem Heiligen Geist - genauso wie eure Väter. 

52 Gibt es einen Propheten, den eure Väter nicht verfolgt haben? Sie haben sogar die getötet, die das Kommen des Gerechten ankündigten - des Gerechten, den ihr nun verraten und ermordet habt. 

53 Ihr habt das Gesetz durch Vermittlung von Engeln erhalten - und doch nicht befolgt!"

Die Rache der Rasenden

54 Als die Mitglieder des Hohen Rates das hörten, gerieten sie in solche Wut über Stephanus, dass sie mit den Zähnen knirschten. 

55 Aber Stephanus war mit dem Heiligen Geist erfüllt und schaute gespannt zum Himmel hinauf. Er sah die Herrlichkeit Gottes und Jesus an Gottes rechter Seite stehen. 

56 "Ich sehe den Himmel offen", sagte er, "und der Menschensohn steht an der rechten Seite Gottes." 

57 Da schrien sie laut auf, hielten sich die Ohren zu und stürzten sich miteinander auf ihn. 

58 Dann zerrten sie ihn aus der Stadt hinaus und steinigten ihn. Dabei legten die Zeugen8 ihre Obergewänder vor einem jungen Mann hin, der Saulus hieß. 

59 Stephanus betete, als sie ihn steinigten: "Herr Jesus", sagte er, "nimm meinen Geist auf!" 

60 Auf die Knie gestürzt rief er noch einmal laut: "Herr, rechne ihnen diese Sünde nicht an!" Mit diesen Worten starb er. Saulus aber war mit dieser Hinrichtung einverstanden.

Il sommo sacerdote gli chiese: "Sono vere queste accuse?" 

2 E questa fu la risposta di Stefano: "Fratelli e padri ascoltate! Il nostro Dio glorioso apparve al nostro antenato Abramo in Iraq, prima ancora che partisse per la Siria. 

3 Gli disse di lasciare il suo paese natìo e i suoi parenti per partire verso un paese che Dio stesso gli avrebbe indicato. 

4 Così Abramo lascio la terra dei Caldei e ando ad abitare in Siria, dove rimase finché suo padre morì. Poi Dio lo condusse qui, in Israele, 

5 ma non gli diede nessuna proprietà, neppure un palmo di terra.Nonostante cio, Dio gli promise che tutta la terra sarebbe stata sua e dei suoi discendenti, benché in quel periodo Abramo non avesse ancora figli. 

6 Poi Dio gli disse anche che questi suoi discendenti avrebbero lasciato quella terra per vivere in un paese straniero, dove sarebbero rimasti schiavi, maltrattati per quattrocento anni. 

7 "Ma io puniro la nazione che li terrà schiavi" aveva aggiunto il Signore. "Dopo di cio, il mio popolo tornerà in questa terra d'Israele, e qui mi adorerà". 

8 Poi Dio stabilì con Abramo il patto della circoncisione. E così nacque Isacco, figlio di Abramo, che fu circonciso otto giorni dopo la nascita.Isacco, poi, genero Giacobbe e Giacobbe, a sua volta, genero i dodici patriarchi [che diedero origine al popolo ebraico] 

9 Questi uomini, invidiosi del fratello Giuseppe, lo vendettero come schiavo e fu portato in Egitto. Ma Dio era con lui 

10 e lo libero da tutte le difficoltà; non solo, gli diede una tale saggezza, che il Faraone, re d'Egitto, lo elesse governatore del proprio regno e lo incarico di tutti gli affari della sua casa. 

11 Ma in Egitto e a Canaan ci fu una grande carestia, e i nostri antenati non riuscirono più a trovare cibo. 

12 Allora Giacobbe, avendo saputo che in Egitto c'era ancora grano, mando i suoi figli a comprarne. 

13 La seconda volta che vi andarono, Giuseppe si fece riconoscere dai fratelli, e così il Faraone venne a conoscere le origini di Giuseppe. 

14 "Allora Giuseppe fece venire in Egitto suo padre Giacobbe e tutta la parentela, settantacinque persone in tutto. 

15 Così Giacobbe e i suoi figli andarono in Egitto e fu proprio lì che morirono tutti questi nostri antenati; 

16 poi i loro corpi furono trasportati a Sichem e sepolti nella tomba che Abramo aveva comprato dai figli di Emmor, padre di Sichem. 

17 "Mentre s'avvicinava il momento in cui Dio avrebbe mantenuto la promessa che aveva fatto ad Abramo, il popolo giudeo cresceva e si moltiplicava in Egitto. 

18 In quel periodo, pero, salì al trono un altro re, che non sapeva niente di Giuseppe. 

19 Questo re perseguito la nostra gente e, agendo con furbizia, obbligo i genitori ad abbandonare i propri figli, perché morissero. 

20 "In quel periodo nacque Mosè, un bambino straordinariamente bello, e per tre mesi i genitori lo allevarono in casa. 

21 Quando [alla fine, non riuscendo più a nasconderlo,] dovettero abbandonarlo, la figlia del Faraone lo trovo e lo adotto come figlio. 

22 Così Mosè fu educato secondo la cultura egiziana e divenne un uomo potente, sia per quello che diceva, sia per quello che faceva. 

23 "All'età di quarant'anni, gli venne in mente di andare a trovare i suoi fratelli, cioè il popolo d'Israele. 

24 [Durante questa visita,] vide un Egiziano maltrattare un Israelita, lo difese e, per vendicarlo, uccise l'Egiziano. 

25 Egli pensava che i suoi fratelli avrebbero capito che Dio lo aveva mandato per salvarli, invece non fu così. 

26 Il giorno dopo ando di nuovo da loro e vide due Israeliti che litigavano. Mosè tento di mettere pace. "Siete fratelli, perché vi fate del male?" disse loro. 

27 "Ma quello che aveva torto lo respinse e disse: "Chi ti ha eletto nostro capo e giudice? 

28 Vuoi forse uccidermi, come hai ucciso quell'Egiziano, ieri?". 

29 "A queste parole, Mosè fuggì dal paese e ando a vivere nella terra di Madian, dove gli nacquero due figli. 

30 "Quarant'anni dopo, mentre si trovava nel deserto vicino al Monte Sinai, gli apparve un angelo tra le fiamme di un cespuglio che bruciava.

31 "Quando Mosè vide quel cespuglio, s'incuriosì e s'avvicino per vedere. Fu allora che sentì la voce del Signore, che diceva: 

32 "Io sono il Dio dei tuoi antenati, di Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe". Mosè, tutto tremante, non osava alzare lo sguardo. 

33 "Allora il Signore gli disse: "Togliti i sandali, perché il terreno che stai calpestando è sacro. 

34 Ho visto quanto soffre il mio popolo in Egitto, ho udito i suoi gemiti e sono sceso per liberarlo. Dunque vieni, ti mandero in Egitto". 

35 Così Dio rimando Mosè in Egitto, lo stesso Mosè che gli Israeliti avevano rinnegato, dicendo: "Chi ti ha eletto nostro capo e giudice?" Lo mando agli Israeliti come loro capo e liberatore, sotto la scorta dell'angelo che gli era apparso nel cespuglio in fiamme. 

36 Così Mosè, compiendo miracoli straordinari, li condusse fuori dall'Egitto, attraverso il Mar Rosso, e rimase nel deserto per quarant'anni. 

37 "Mosè stesso disse agli Israeliti: "Dio farà sorgere fra di voi un profeta come me". 

38 Costui è lo stesso Mosè che, mentre gli Israeliti erano radunati nel deserto, parlo con l'angelo sul monte Sinai e ricevette le parole della vita da trasmettere a voi. 

39 "Eppure, i nostri antenati non vollero ascoltarlo, anzi lo respinsero e, rimpiangendo in cuor loro l'Egitto, 

40 dissero ad Aronne: "Costruiscici degli idoli che ci possano guidare, perché non sappiamo che fine ha fatto questo Mosè, che ci ha portato fuori dall'Egitto!" 

41 E così fecero un idolo a forma di vitello, davanti al quale offrirono dei sacrifici, facendo gran festa in onore di quell'oggetto che avevano fatto con le loro mani. 

42 "Allora Dio volto loro le spalle e lascio che adorassero il sole, la luna e le stelle. Nel libro delle profezie di Amos, il Signore Iddio chiede: "Israele, erano per me i sacrifici che facevi durante quei quarant'anni trascorsi nel deserto? 

43 No di certo! Quelli che ti stavano a cuore erano dèi pagani: Moloc e la stella del vostro dio Romfàn, le cui immagini fabbricaste per adorarli. Percio io vi faro deportare oltre Babilonia". 

44 "I nostri antenati portarono con sé attraverso il deserto il tabernacolo della testimonianza. Era una tenda che Dio stesso aveva ordinato a Mosè di erigere secondo il modello che gli aveva mostrato. 

45 Anni dopo, quando Giosuè guido gli Israeliti contro le nazioni pagane che Dio scaccio davanti a loro, il tabernacolo fu portato nel loro nuovo territorio, Israele, dove rimase fino al tempo del re Davide. 

46 "Davide ottenne il favore di Dio e gli chiese il privilegio di costruire un tempio per l'Iddio di Giacobbe. 

47 Ma fu il re Salomone che lo costruì. 

48 "Tuttavia l'Altissimo non vive nei templi costruiti dalla mano dell'uomo. Come scrisse il profeta: 

49 "Il cielo è il mio trono", dice il Signore, "e la terra è lo sgabello dei miei piedi. Che casa potreste mai costruirmi voi, perché io ci rimanga? 

50 Non sono forse stato io a fare tutte queste cose?" 

51 "Testardi! Siete aridi di cuore e duri d'orecchi! Dovete sempre opporre resistenza allo Spirito Santo? Come hanno fatto i vostri antenati, così fate anche voi! 

52 Nominatemi un profeta che i vostri avi non abbiano perseguitato! Hanno perfino ucciso quelli che avevano predetto l'arrivo del giusto, che voi avete tradito e assassinato, 

53 voi, che avete deliberatamente infranto le leggi di Dio, nonostante le avevate ricevute dalle mani degli angeli!"

Morte di Stefano

54 Alle accuse di Stefano, i capi giudei erano fuori di sé e digrignavano i denti dalla rabbia. 

55 Ma Stefano, pieno di Spirito Santo, fissati gli occhi al cielo, vide Dio nella sua gloria e Gesù che stava alla sua destra. 

56 E disse loro: "Ecco io vedo aprirsi i cieli e Gesù, il Messia, che sta in piedi alla destra di Dio!" 

57 Allora quelli, coprendosi le orecchie, cominciarono a gridare. Poi, tutti insieme gli si scagliarono addosso e 

58 lo trascinarono fuori dalla città per ucciderlo a sassate. I testimoni si tolsero i mantelli e li gettarono ai piedi di un giovane di nome Paolo [perché li custodisse]. 

59 Mentre lo lapidavano, Stefano pregava: "Signore Gesù, ricevi il mio spirito". 

60 Poi cadde in ginocchio, gridando: "Signore, non addebitare loro questo peccato!" E morì.

Stephen’s Speech

1 And the high priest said, “Are these things so?” 

2 And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 

3 and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’ 

4 Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. 

5 Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child. 

6 And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years. 

7 ‘But I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.’ 

8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. 

9 “And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him 

10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 

11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 

12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. 

13 And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh. 

14 And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all. 

15 And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers, 

16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. 

17 “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt 

18 until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph. 

19 He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive. 

20 At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house, 

21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 

22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. 

23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 

24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 

25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 

26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’

27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 

28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’

29 At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. 

30 “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 

31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 

32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 

33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 

34 I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’ 

35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 

36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. 

37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’ 

38 This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us. 

39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 

40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 

41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands. 

42 But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 

43 You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’ 

44 “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 

45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, 

46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.1 

47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 

48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,

49 “‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? 

50 Did not my hand make all these things?’ 

51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 

52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 

53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 

55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 

56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 

57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together2 at him. 

58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 

59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 

60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
